Did Jesus hit his disciples with the Great Commission (Matt 28:18-20) cold turkey? Did He fail to provide reasonable demonstration on ways to fulfill it? Let’s take a look:
A Roman Centurion – Matthew 8:5-13 read it. Jesus heals the Gentile Centurion’s servant, and he also says two very interesting things: “I tell you the truth,” Jesus exclaimed, “I have not found anyone in Israel with such a great faith!” Jesus uses this occasion to teach His disciples that Gentiles have just as great a potential for faith as Jews. Then he also says, “I say to you that many will come from the east and west and will take their places at the feast of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.” Sound like Gentiles in heaven to you?

The disciples still didn’t understand after all these examples, but Jesus opened their eyes at the end of the book of Luke. Jesus died and is resurrected then He appears to two disciples on the Road to Emmaus. Luke 24:13-49. They, not recognizing Him, say, “We had hoped that [Jesus] was the One who was going to redeem Israel.” Jesus replies, “How foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?” Then he explains the scriptures and their hearts burned inside them. They realize who it is, and Jesus disappears. They run back to the disciples and start telling them, but Jesus appears. And listen to vs 45-48, “Then He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.” This is what they learned when Jesus opened their minds to understand.
Jesus gave the disciples an example of reaching the nations, and opened their minds to the Scriptures which paint a picture of reaching the nations. So the Great Commission is just telling us to do what He did while He was on earth!
